This is not good news for Southwest Airlines public relations.

Forty-four Boeing planes were grounded "to determine whether they should go through further safety inspections," Southwest Airlines spokeswoman Whitney Eichinger said Wednesday.

She could not confirm whether they were fuselage inspections or rudder inspections, issues which have recently raised concerns among Federal Aviation Administration officials and congressional investigators.

Hope this goes as smoothly as possible for them and they can get these jets back in the air. This must be causing scheduling nightmares.

You can jack with people's fares, their luggage, their sanity. You can have the world's rudest FAs and GAs. You can bump them and cancel their flights unnecessarily. But you absolutely, positively, can not screw around with safety, or you will lose all credibility.

ValuJet. Enough said. Better shape up, Southwest...
