I was reading a thread at a.net about the PHL problem of gate space and how southwest is essentially at capacity with its current # of gates. One of the ideas was to get rid of the "blue barn" (overseas terminal) and build a concourse/terminal over there and make it a WN area. Is that in fact feasible? If so, couldn't WN just take their plans that they had for the Boeing field terminal and build it at PHL (on a smaller scale of course)?

Uggh. The LAST thing PHL needs is more flights and more congestion. PHL is rapidly climbing to the top of my list of airports to avoid like the plague. It is notorious for delays, cancellations, lost luggage, etc., and I've had nothing but problems at that airport. And it's not just a US Air thing; it seems to be every airline operating there. I'm not surprised that DL recently announced service at Wilmington, DE (ILG) - the first real scheduled pax service there in a long time. It allowed them to correctly claim to be the only airline serving all 50 U.S. states. Don't be surprised if another airline, perhaps AA or UA, starts service at ILG as an alternative to PHL. Wilmington is also a pretty high-income city, with lots of business o&d from DuPont, several Pharmaceutical companies, and of course - just about every company is incorporated in Delaware, so there are lots of lawyers and such located in Wilmington.

Likewise, Trenton/Mercer County airprot in NJ (TTN) has had various pax service in the past, and now the latest reincarnation of the PanAm name flies there from some weird places. But it's close to Princeton U., several pharmaceutical firms and lots of other high-tech firms, whose choices now are EWR or PHL. At the very least, I wouldn't be surprised if Allegiant starts flying from TTN to Orlando/Sanford.

Can I get a peanut crumb with that thimble of Coke?

There was an interesting article in the Philly paper a few weeks back about USAir and the philly factor.

I will post it if I can find it.

I honestly think that in the next 10-15 years, Southwest will leave its "mold" that it has been in pretty much since beginning service. They already have landed in big cities that some a few years ago would never have thought (PHL, DEN, IAD). That just goes to show that they can shock and surprise people *lol*

I think they picked the low-hanging fruit first, by staying away from big hub airports at first. We'll see them finally coming to MSP, ATL, and EWR eventually.

I think we will see them at MSP before ATL.

MSP? Really? MSP already has frontier, airtran, midwest, sun country, champion air, and some others. That is quite a bit to go up against.

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

True...but if you think the opposite and look at who is on the MSP-MDW route, you have FL and NW. And from what i heard the MDW-MSP route fills up a lot.

But are they at capacity though? Would one more airliner push it over the top?
