I was doing some research on the number of international passengers that come to IND each year. While as of this time I haven't been able to find numbers specific to IND I have found numbers for the city and numbers for the state.

According to the Department of Commerce some 66,000 travelers came to Indianapolis from international destinations. For the state the number was 122,000.

and http://www.tinet.ita.doc.gov/view/f-2004-45-540/index.html

For whatever reason the numbers were down from 2003 to 2004. Perhaps this was because of a slower global economy. Given the location of the Indiana population and proximity to airports with commercial traffic I'm speculating that 75% of the state numbers went through IND. That would be 91.5k. That would be 250 daily passengers choosing IND. I'm not sure how accurate that 122k figure is so ths number could be off. If you went strictly on the 66,000 number it would be 180 per day.

More interesting bits of information from the Department of Commerce. Those statistics I posted were foreigners coming to Indianapolis and Indiana. Those numbers DO NOT include Mexicans and Canadians. They DO NOT include Hoosiers flying overseas.

Here are the 2003 numbers for Canadians coming to Indiana.

"For Canadians to Indiana (2003): 170,000
19,000 by air
113,000 by car
36,000 by bus
2,000 other"

Source: Richard Champley of the Department of Commerce

Hopefully he'll be able to hook me up with outbound numbers as well.

I got the rest of the data from the Department of Commerce. In 2004 there were 218,000 people from Indiana that traveled overseas. Of that 82,000 were from Indianapolis.

So with 82,000 people from Indianapolis traveling overseas and 66,000 people from overseas coming to Indianapolis that brings each way international service to 148,000. Thats basing the numbers on all travelers having round trip tickets. That is 405 people per day. If you look at the State of Indiana total there were 340,000 total international travelers. 218k from Indiana and 122k from overseas. Total each way service would equal 931 per day.

Additional Note: This data does not reflect how many people started their travels in IND or how many people drove to CVG or ORD. It also doesn't reflect how many people from OH and IL or KY drove to IND to start their journey.

These numbers do not reflect travelers to Canada or Mexico.

I was able to find international passenger statistics for 2005.

The Indiana to overseas number number from 122,000 in 2004 to 152,000 in 2005 reflecting a 25% increase.

I'm trying to get newer data but I am having no luck so far.

The new 2010 numbers with the possibility of a higher margin of error due to sampling size.

Overseas travelers to Indiana in 2010 = 132,000 (0.5% market share in 2010)

Overseas travelers to Indianapolis in 2010 = 79,000 (0.3% market share in 2010)

I read somewhere that over 200 people supposedly fly to Europe out of Indianapolis on a daily basis. I don't know how accurate that is though. I'd figure 200 folks would be enough for at least ONE daily flight. Not to mention other travelers from the surrounding areas that would take advantage of it just for the fact that it would be available.

I know now that it will never happen on a 757 after seeing how many westward flights have been diverted because of fuel. IND will never happen unless its a 767, 787 or something like that.
