It looks like they are finally setting up a webcam for the construction project.

Finally they got a webcam, now we can really watch the progress.

Wasn't there a remote satellite in the master plan in the shape of an "x?" Also...When will we know what will become of the current terminal? Will they demolish the airport expressway?

Well, for a while there was a rumor floating about that claimed FedEx was going to accuire the old terminal, but I don't know how accurate that rumor is. I would think that Airport Expressway would not be demolished, at least not east of 465.

I haven't heard any talk about demolishing airport expressway. You certainly wouldn't do it inside 465, as there are lots of businesses located off those exits. I also think that, at least for a couple of years, the hotels there will remain in operation.

I do recall that someone in the mayor's office was quoted as saying that they considered the idea of putting a tunnel under the new airport, under the cross runway, and (I guess) under the current terminal, that would link up to Airport Expressway. But it was too expensive, and was quickly dropped.

I don't think there's much credence to the idea of FedEx using the old terminal, for three reasons: 1. they're already expanding their current facility, and could potentially do so again before running out of room; 2. The passenger terminal isn't set up very well to handle freight of any kind, and it's not adjacent to their current facility - can you imagine sorting several thousand packages that arrive in the current building and have to leave from the old pax terminal?; 3. the old USPS express package facility is still sitting there, unused, on the other side of the airport, and it's much more suitable for FedEx - they'd buy/lease that before they'd take over the old pax terminal.

My guess is that it will sit idle for quite a long time. Part of it could eventually be torn down, like maybe the D concourse, if there is demand for the space that part of the terminal occupies. But eventually, it would work well as a general/private aviation teminal combined with a charter terminal. If the new airport grows quickly, the old terminal could even be reopened for a few years to provide additional gates for new airlines, until the new terminal could be expanded.

how often does the "webcam" post a new picture? I'm thinking about making a time lapse of the construction, but i don't know how often to grab a picture.

This is really sad. They haven't updated the image since Oct 16th.

Just some quick answers to some things that I know. No, the Airport Expressway will not be torn down. The Airport Expressway is in fact Raymond Street (look at a map), its just that from I-70 to I-465 its called the Airport Expressway. I'm sure it will be renamed to Raymond Street to avoid confusion for travelers. The old airport terminal will be torn down, although I am not sure of the schedule for demolition, but the administration building will not. The administration building is the taller glass structure between the C and D concourses, which is in fact a separate building from the terminal. The administration offices was initially going to be on the top floor of the new terminal, but this was determined to be too costly, so they lopped off the top floor and decided to stay where they are. In the master plan of the airport, the old terminal is being demolished and the space reserved for for future cargo growth, although not necessarily for FedEx. In the next five years INDOT will be expanding and adding lanes to I-465 on the west side much like they did on the east. I'm sure some of the present parking will get demolished to make way for this. What else, I don't think the web cam is really a cam, I just think they take a picture of the construction going on from the new tower and post it on the website about every other week, though it is cool to see the progress going on from that angle.

I'm curious as to how much the administrative space in the new terminal would have cost compared to the real estate value of the space the administration building currently sits on. Not to mention you have a new facility then compared to an age old facility with no depreciation left.

I have been saving snapshots from the view cam each day (since June) even though a lot of them are the same one. Then once the project is done i will hopefully have a neat "slide show." Smile

Depreciation shouldn't matter for a government-owned facility like the airport admin building. They don't get the favorable tax treatment for depreciation, and it's also not a financial cost as it is for a company. The only consideration should be the overall cost of old versus new. Perhaps they still have a contingency for moving airport admin if the current building would ever need to be torn down. Heck, they could just lease space in Park Fletcher or somewhere nearby - they really don't need to be on the airport grounds.

I don't know what the deal is with the construction cam. The image is now 3 weeks out of date. I hope they update soon. I wish they would have spent just a little bit of money and gotten the same cam system that is being used for the new stadium.
