It looks as if the city is finally getting serious about mass transit. The City of Indianapolis is currently in negotiations with the US Post Office downtown to build a $20 to $30 million dollar multi-modal transit center on Post Office property. This project would be funded nearly completely by the federal government. The city has to have a firm plan in place by fall in order to keep the promised federal funds for the project.

"He says down the road the site would connect buses to light rail or other types of rapid transit planned for Fishers and beyond. A transit center might look like Charlottes with concessions and shops. Or it might be more of a pedestrian mall.

The mayor says the transit center would take up only a portion of the post office property. The rest of the space could be used for retail, parking or even residential development..."
