The last few flights out of IND I've taken have all been late evening ones. I've noticed an increase over what I recall from about a year or more ago in the number of planes parked on the tarmac overnight. Last night, there was an airtran bird, a DL CRJ, two AA MD's all parked out on that pad just northwest of the A terminal. NW themselves had two Airbuses parked along the back wall at the A terminal, and all but two gates had a plane parked for the night. This just seems like more planes than ever used to spend the night at IND. Is there just more demand for early-morning flights now?

Apparently its really high demand in the morning. I know when I've gone out to take pics it has been nuts. I think I counted some 14 NW jets one morning.

The most interesting part of it is that it's not just NW, and it's totally different than it used to be. Just 3-4 years ago or so, you'd land at IND on a late arrival, and there'd be a couple of US jets parked, maybe 2-3 various other RJ's, and the occasional 737. Now when you land on one of the last flights in, there are more planes than there are gates. And every airline except perhaps Midwest and Frontier seem to have at least one plane parked overnight.

And the new terminal is only supposed to be 40 gates. Seeing the construction cam photos it doesn't seem to match the site big site plan thats posted.

United has had a 757 overnight off and on all summer. It was there last night again. Not sure which hub it serves though.

As I returned to IND just after midnight the other night, I noticed again an Airtran, a Delta, and two AA's on the pad. Every gate in B and C had a plane parked at it, plus there was another Southwest 737 parked near the terminal, but not at a gate. Also, we were the fifth CO plane to pull in, and they parked us near C7, but not at the jetbridge. It was interesting to have 5 CO birds parked overnight, considering they only serve three destinations from IND. From what I could see of A, it was the usual crowd of parked planes. All the terminals had every gate occupied and then some. Except for D. There were at least 2 empty gates, and I couldn't see over to the far side of the terminal. Interesting.

It would be great to get a picture of all those planes!

I would assume that most people want to get home in the morning, so the airlines are bringing the red eye flights in. Most likely just demand of the flight which you stated earlier.
