Isn't Champion a scheduled charter service, though? That puts them under a different kind of FAA operating license. Not that it makes a difference to what we're talking about here, but Champion is more like that Fly Aloha Whatever airline that we discussed a few weeks back. They don't have to follow all the same rules as a regular airline, including rules about compensation for bumping, rerouting, refunding of tickets, etc. Allegiant, on the other hand, is a regular airline - the 34th largest domestic airline in the U.S., AAMOF, with 0.35% domestic market share.

I actually go to the transtats web site, access the database, dump out the info I'm looking for, create a pivtot table and sort it by pax numbers. Sounds complicated, but it's not. And to answer the question, yes - the rankings include all the regional carriers. They have to include them, because they are technically independent airlines with their own FAA licenses, reporting requirements, etc. But it makes it interesting, IMHO, because an airline like Chautauqua will fly regional routes for more than one mainline carrier. Great Lakes, for another example, flies for both UA and Frontier out of Denver alone. So it really puts a carrier like Allegiant into perspective when you consider that they're smaller than many of the regional carriers. To save you the trouble of yanking the database, here's the list, ranking airlines by domestic market share. Keep in mind that this is only domestic flights, which is why Southwest ranks first on the list. Most rankings you see include the domestic origins of international flights, which is why American is usually ranked first.

Is that numbers per annum from 2004?

What is interesting about Allegiant is that if that is for 2005, at those numbers, figuring in that they were basically operating 13 daily flights (on average), they were running at 94% load factor capacity on each flight...average.

I am tempted to call the number and ask about the "same day - same cost" service as Allegiant.

13 flights a day? something doesn't seem right about that!

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

Those numbers are from July 2006 only. So it's just a snapshot from the most recent full month for which there are data in the database.

That would put their load factor then roughly at about 91%
