NWA mechanics endorse strike
Liz Fedor, Star Tribune

The showdown between Northwest Airlines and its mechanics union might be headed toward a strike, a bankruptcy -- or both.

The Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) said Tuesday that more than 92 percent of its members who took part in a referendum have authorized their leaders to call a strike.

Meanwhile, the head of the Northwest pilots union warned Tuesday that the carrier could file for bankruptcy as early as October if it does not reach concessionary agreements with its labor unions or if Congress does not appear likely to give Northwest relief on its pension contributions.

Better to go on CO anyway. They've launched service to a bunch of smaller European cities ex-EWR, and they're offering killer fares. My boss just flew to Hamburg via EWR for about $600, without a weekend stay. I've seen fares EWR-Bristol, England offered for $250 roundtrip. Even if you want to go to London, Paris, Amsterdam, or whatever, consider flying to one of these smaller cities and taking a train or buying an intra-Europe air fare once you get there - it's much cheaper to buy these fares from within Europe than to book them from the states, particularly for France.
