Good move by American Airlines. Looks like they are buying 42 of the fuel efficient 787-9 jets for delivery starting in 2012. Personally I think they should have acted a bit sooner but better late than never. These jets will allow them to reduce operating costs and even allow them to expand outside of ORD, DFW and MIA. If I lived in STL I might be getting a little excited about this.

I think you're right about STL. And perhaps the RDU-London route, if it's still around in 2012. How do you think they'll deploy them, though. More frequent flights from US hubs to current destinations? Additional flights from US hubs to smaller overseas cities? New international flights from secondary yet important markets for AA (like SJC, AUS, RDU, MCI, etc.)?

Also we can't assume it will be all international long haul. Why not run LGA/EWR/JFK to places like LAX, SFO, LAS, PDX and SEA? Or maybe ATL-LAX, MIA-LAX/SFO/SEA? Maybe you can add HNL and ANC to that. Longer domestic service where you can put more passengers in a plane and run it in a fuel efficient manner. I think this could make domestic long haul and transcontinental flying much more profitable.

Good point. But maybe they're more likely to put the new, efficient, 787s with their modern cabin comforts on the long-haul international routes and divert the older aircraft to the high-volume domestic routes. I guess we'll have to wait a few years to find out... Sad

Hopefully we don't start reading about the first 787 delivery being pushed back to 2010 or 2011 or something nasty like that. Unlike the A380 which to me represents everything wrong with air travel today I will gladly try the 787.

Come on, Indy - would you really turn down a chance to fly on the 380 if you had one? Cool

OK. You get invited by your wealthy tycoon friend to fly on Singapore's A380 in the SkySuite. You're still not gonna give it a go? Confused:
