Just saw the press release tonight on Indystar.com. I didn't see an expected opening date. Is this a sign of things to come?

I thought so until I did some checking and found that Delta has lounges everywhere. They even have them in New Orleans and Jacksonville.

Those cities seem a bit surprising. I do know that Delta once had a crew base in MSY due to a high number of aircraft RONs there but I'm not sure about JAX.

The least we can take away from this is that DL doesn't have a complete lack of attention for IND. It's probably a good indication that we won't lose a whole lot.

Why do my favorite airlines end up going defunct??

Here are the details of the new Delta Sky Club in IND. Construction is expected to be completed around the 1st of August. I assume it will be opening around the same time as well. The facility will be just under 5,000 square feet in size (4,903 actual). The Sky Club will be located just beyond security right before the A concourse. The lease term is for 10 years with an additional 10 year option. The rate for the first 10 years will be $95 per square foot or $465,785. The airport authority will deduct rental credits of $70,365.48 per year for 10 years.

I have no idea if that makes this a good deal or not. But anyway now you know the details.

Sign me up! As someone mentioned earlier, this could be an indication that DAL hasn't forgotten about IND and we won't lose a lot. I wonder if this could be a sign of more things to come. I once heard that Northwest had big pland for IND but that was way before a merger was even discussed. I just wonder if Delta sees the same potential in IND that Northwest did. Rumor has it is the CVG hub is going away.

10 years is a pretty big commitment. Pretty much all that is left from IND is hub flying and focus city flying. So can't really lose too much more. I think long haul service is in the future. Maybe next summer.

When you say long haul, do you predict international or more west coast segments?

I think we will get an international flight. Indianapolis has a strong market and the economy is showing signs of a turn around. When summer of 2011 rolls around traffic should have picked up a great deal over where it was in 2009 and we'll have the new belly cargo facility very close to the A concourse and Delta will have the new Sky Club as well. I don't know if we would get AMS, CDG or even LHR. But I do have a hunch something is coming. That Sky Club is large and a significant investment by Delta and on a 10 year lease. People who fly international tend to check in early and clear security early at the recommendation of the airlines. Having this large club would give business travelers a place to do business during their extended wait before the flight.

Wow, I never really thought about it like that; nor taken the belly cargo facility into account. For quite some time I've been hearing that international travelers are growing increasingly tired of connecting through ORD, DTW, JFK; etc.

Being tired of connections isn't new. Unfortunately I don't think the airlines really care what the passengers want. But maybe IND winning the JD Power & Associates award will draw some attention here.

Well said. I took my mother to the airport this afternoon and asked a Delta agent about int'l service and she stated that she's been hearing rumors too.

Fit2Fly,

So what is this delta sky club lounge, what are the benifits for IND?

The Sky Club is a members only lounge at the airport. Delta has them all over the place. You pay a yearly fee for access. In the lounge you get free internet access, free snacks and the best part... free alcohol. Smile It is a great place to spend time before a flight. Makes a layover more enjoyable.
