Special thanks to a representative from IndianapolisAirport.com for providing me this information. The new control tower (according to the FAA) will be going live in April of this year. I assume that sometime over the next 3 months or so the crosswind runway shortening project will be completed. This will complete the 2nd major phase of the midfield terminal expansion project.

Phase 1: Highway Work
Phase 2: Control Tower
Phase 3: Terminal Construction

Word has it that the tower should be online around the 23rd. So not sure if it goes online during the day on Sunday or late at night after the last regular traffic comes in Sunday night. I assume they want the new tower hot for the outbound rush Monday morning.

I would think a Saturday night switch would be better. Sunday is by far the lightest traffic day, because there aren't any FedEx flights arriving. So a Sat switch would give them Sunday in case there are any glitches that require the controllers to delay or (gasp) divert inbound flights that day.

In any case - very cool. The second tallest air traffic control tower in the country (damn MCO with their 5 extra feet). Go IND.
