7E72004 took some video during a recent trip. I was able to get a few screen shots from his video of the terminal construction. Here are the pics. I'll be uploading his massive video later.

Enjoy

7E72004... here is your video.

The Video

Warning... this is a 200mb download. The image contains a video diary of a trip as well as (and most importantly) video of the new terminal after landing at IND. Excellent footage. Worth the download in my opinion.

Edit: Ignore the cat part at the beginning. I have no idea how to edit video. In fact if someone here can download the video and edit out everything except the video of the new terminal I'd appreciate it.

BTW the good video of the terminal comes at around the 52:26 mark of the video.

When you click the link, does it automatically start dowloading on the page you opened, or is it supposed to download somewhere else?

That may be impossible to pull off because the first scheduled departure could be delayed and you'd end up missing being #1.

I wouldn't think it would be that hard. The first departure will likely be on an a/c that stations here overnight.

I guess it is also hard to tell because it depends on what part of the season the terminal opens...if in the winter, then there is obviously the chance of snow, etc.

A great way for me to start the day would be a 2pm flight. I'm killing myself on the 30th with a 10am-ish flight. I have to be up with the birds for that one.

I also like the CO 401 IND-IAH, 0630 departure, with a connection to MSY, followed by CO 4 MSY-IAH departing at 1640 later the same day, getting back to IND at 2206. That's a really long day. Neutral

What would be the cost of adding on more gates to the project now as opposed to later on when the new terminal gates get filled up? It almost seems like it would be more logical and even economical to at least build the concourse (extend it) out and at least have the gate areas finished...maybe leave the jetbridges out until needed.

P.s. if and when the satellite terminal gets built, will there be an underground rail system? If so, couldn't they at least start the construction of that and have the "shell" in place now as oposed to later?

I think you have to balance the cost of construction now (gaining economies of scale and scope, i.e. - "while you're doing that, you might as well do this too" approach) versus the likelihood of having a structure in place that's not earning any revenue. If you build the terminal extensions now, you'd have to light it, heat/cool it, etc., even if you walled it off until it was time to use it. You would also have depreciation of the structure that would start right away, and that's a serious expense. Looked at another way, if you had 40 gates all being used and earning $1000 a day per gate, you'd be making $40,000 per day. But if you had 50 gates, 10 not being used for a while, you'd still only be making $40,000 per day and would have to pay for those extra 10 gates out of that revenue.

I think the airport is designed in such a way as to be able to add the extra gates as easily and inexpensively as possible at the time they're needed.
