Noticed in the Star article from the weekend that post-9/11 changes to the layout of the terminal resulted in 2 large security checkpoints on either side of the "civic plaza" retail area. The original plan called for one central checkpoint prior to the retail area.
This new config will really define the new building as having two distinct and separate terminals. The diagram didn't appear that one would be able to move from one terminal to the other without leaving the secure area, passing through the civic plaza, and re-checking through security on the other side. Can this be correct? If so, how utterly stupid is this? Surely, they'll design a corridor that will allow screened pax to move from one terminal to the other. If not, this is an absolutely awful design and really disappointing given the unique opportunity to design a completely new facility post-9/11.

While there may be two security points there may also be a common area that connects the two concourses. It would be questionable planning if the two concourse are not accessible by each other without passing through security again.

I am sure if you go thru one checkpoint, you will be able to access the other concourse/terminal. It is just a matter of convenience.

I don't know if I'm too sure. The original design which was shortly before 9/11 had one massive checkpoint that took up the entire circular "civic plaza" area. The subsequent revision split it in two, and I assume the design placed them between the civic plaza retail area and the concourses (though I'm not quite sure exactly where). If the two concourses (A and B) are connected behind security, I would be interested to know how, since they are opposite each other and with the open civic plaza between them. I think the reasoning is too make the security lines short enough that people will feel comfortable to shop and eat before security and still make their flight, in addition to placing the majority of the retail space before security for all the greeters and well wishers to take full advantage. This would be a good question to poise to the project managers.

I think the simple solution would be a corridor that is completely separate from the civic plaza, connecting the two sides of the terminal. But I just don't see that in any of the published designs at this point.
