The new airport terminal â?? a work of art that everybody can sign
INDIANAPOLIS â?? At nine events in three days, the Indianapolis Airport Authority will give communities throughout the area an opportunity to participate in the traditional â??capping offâ? ceremony for the New Indianapolis Airport midfield terminal building, now under construction.
At each event, people will be invited to sign architectural steel beams that will be put in place as finishing touches to the terminal structure. The beams will be painted white so that the signatures will show clearly. A topping-off ceremony is planned for early 2007.
Here is the schedule for beam signing events:
Friday, December 8
Three signings are scheduled for Friday:
10:00 a.m. â?? Ernie Pyle Elementary (IPS School 90) at 3351 W. 18th Street. The beam signing will be in the parking lot behind the school.
12:45 p.m. â?? Northwest High School, 5525 W. 34th Street. The beam signing will be on the sidewalk in front of the school.
6:00 p.m. â?? Decatur Central High School, State Road 67 south of I-465. The beam signing will be outside the gymnasium, where Decatur Central will play Mooresville High School.
Monday, December 11
There are five signings scheduled for Monday, including a special signing at the Plainfield Town Council meeting at 6:00 p.m. at the Plainfield Recreation and Aquatic Center.
The other Monday signings are:
7:00 â?? 9:00 a.m.: Monument Circle in Indianapolis.
9:30 â?? 10:30 a.m.: Arsenal Technical High School, 2500 E. Michigan Street
11:00 a.m. â?? noon: George Washington High School, 2215 W. Washington Street
1:30 p.m. â?? 2:30 p.m.: J. Everett Light Career Center, 1901 E. 86th Street (behind North Central High School)
Tuesday, December 12
10:40 a.m. â?? noon: Community leaders luncheon at Ben Davis High School, 1200 N. Girls School Road.â??
I will be at Monument Circle Monday shortly before nine to sign. Anyone else? Considering how much we have vested in this, it would be a symbolic gesture.

That might be an interesting idea. Maybe some of us could meet and sign it? I could take some pics of some of the members signing the beam to post on the site. Who all is interested in being there?

I went to Plainfield on monday night. There wasn't much there, just a truck with some white steel beams for signing, some sharpie markers, two artist renderings of the new terminal, and some pamphlets. The people involved with the signing said the beams would be displayed along the terminal entrances, but it made me think, what prevents people from signing the beams after the terminal opens? Isn't that inviting people to "sign" the airport?

They are making some good progress. It's a shame that the original opening date is not happening --7/7/07
