Does anyone know what kind of arrivals/departures display board will be going in the new terminal? I know it sounds strange but I hope they go with the split-flap system. Don't know what that is?

I know they used to have one at Frankfurt. Don't remember if they still do. I believe the FRA train station has it. To me there is just something impressive about a board like that. I'd love to see that in the new terminal. It will be a conversation piece and it wouldn't surprise me if arriving guests (aviation fans) take a detour just to check the board out. Using a board like that is like using a wood bat in baseball. There is something about that sound.

Here are some videos on youtube.com showing the boards in action. It is also called a solari board.

If I had to guess, I'd say probably flat panel displays like they have in some areas now like at the greeting area by the B/C security checkpoint.

I hope they reconsider if that is the case. Those displays are quite dull. They spent a pretty penny on art. Why not use a display like a split-flap board? In my opinion it is art. It is also a bit of aviation history. Honestly who is going to remember that IND has art? Do we know if IND has art now? What about any other airport? I promise you people will remember a display like that.

I agree with you Indy, it is art, and it isn't an impossible feat either. Conseco Fieldhouse has a solaria board. That was the first time I had ever seen one, and I remember being fascinated by it.

Ultimately though, I would imagine we will probably see flat panel monitors everywhere instead.

I think the split-flat arr/dep board idea is brilliant. They have something like that at Conseco Fieldhouse, actually - out in the main lobby area, you know? They do still have those boards at several airports, and it is pretty cool, but they are disappearing. It would be a cool, nostalgic nod to the glory days of aviation.

One interesting thing that I've noticed about most European airports - they're still intrinsically set up like train stations in many ways. When you go to a train station, you wait until the big board click-clacks to update which platform/track your train will depart from. Then you go down and get on the train. The airports are the same. Gates aren't assigned until maybe an hour before the flight. So you're expected to wait out in the main area until your flight's gate is annouced, then go through security and go to the gate. That's part of why you tend to see a small crowd of people standing out in the middle of the giant airport lobby staring up at the big board. It's kind of cool...

Can I get a peanut crumb with that thimble of Coke?
